Quick bats and dominating starting pitching, led by an All-American, are featured on the Jewish Sports Review's 2000 College Division (D-II & D-III) All-America Baseball Team. Now, let's meet the players.

After meeting with limited success in his first two seasons, ERIC WOLF exploded as a junior for Muhlenberg (14-23) hithng .391 (#1) on 50/128 (#1 in both) with 5 home runs (#1), 28 rbi's (#2), 9 doubles (#2 tie), 4 triples (#1 tie) and 4/5 stolen bases. Eric defended 1B well for the Mules with a .978 f.a on 244 putouts, 17 assists and 6 errors. He was named All-Centennial Conference, lst-team.

KARL BAUM rounded out his career at Binghamton (26-19) with another outstanding season. He hit .357 on 55/154 with 8 dingers (#1) and 41 rbi's (#3) while covering the right side of the infield with a .972 f.a. on 78 putouts, 94 assists and 5 errors.

A shortstop with a talented bat, JORDAN KRALL hit .323 for Amherst (19-9)on 30/93 with one homer and 22 rbi's (#3 tie). A fine fielder in past seasons, Jordan's junior defensive stats have not arrived. He was named a NESCAC, All-Academic.

Haverford (6-16) co-captain MATT POPOWSKY (P) will remember his junior year. He hit .374 (#1) on 40/107 with 11 rbi's (#5 tie), 25 runs (#1) and fielded .860 at 3B with 24 putouts, 68 assists and 15 errors. Matt was named All-Centennial Conference, lst-team.

Senior catcher JAYSON FRIEDMAN showed promise as a junior transfer from College of Charleston and became Philadelphia's (11-34) leader as a senior. Jayson pounded out a .335 b.a. (#1) on 52/155 (#1 in hits) with 5 home runs (#3), 32 rbi's (#2),12 doubles (#1), 4 triples (#1), and a .561 slugging % (#1). Behind the plate, Jayson finished with a .982 f.a. on 227 putouts, 50 assists and 5 errors. Most of the assists came on throwing out 37/83 base runners. Jayson was named All-NYAC, lst-team,NYAC Academic Player of the Year and ABCA, D-II, All-Northeast Region, lst-team.

ADAM ROSENTHAL patrolled the OF for West Chester (11-38) and had another productive season. He hit .305 (#3) on 36/118 (#2 in hits) with 2 homers (#2 tie), 15 rbi's (#3),17 runs (#3 tie), 7 doubles (#3 tie) and an .882 f.a. with 28 putouts, 2 assists and 4 errors.

JAY KATZ wound up a fine career at WPI (16-13) at shortstop, although we have moved him to the OF to field our best team. He hit .301 (#4) on 28/93 with 3 dingers (#3), 23 rbi's (#1), 6 doubles (#2), 5/7 SB's and an .884 f.a. with 38 putouts, 84 assists and 16 errors.

BRIAN SHAPIRO (P) broke in for Tufts (26-12) showing power and speed as he hit .305 b.a. on 43/141 (#2) with 5 home runs (#1), 30 rbi's (#2) and 10/12 SB's (#1). He was also moved to the OF from shortstop where he fielded .833 on 25 putouts, 100 assists and 25 errors.

Normally a catcher, we're utilizing ADAM DANSKY of Emerson (5-16) as our DH. Adam hit .348 (#4) on 23/66 with one homer,12 rbi's (#4 tie), 11 doubles (#1) and 15 walks (#1). Adam was named All-Centennial Conference, lst-team.

Pitchers

GREG BELSON led Montclair State to the NCAA D-III national championships as he went 10-1(#1 in wins) with a 2.43 ERA (#1) in 101.1 IP'd allowing 92 hits and 26 walks while striking out 86. He completed 4/12 starts with 2 shutouts and 2 saves while limiting the opposition to a .237 team b.a. Greg was named All-Mid Atlantic Region, lst-team, Baseball America, All-America, D-III, first-team, and was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks on the 26th round. He is now playing for the Missoula Osprey of the short-season Pioneer League.

KYLE GOLDWATER quieted opposition bats in overwhelming style for Ursinus (29-10) as he went 11-2 (#1 in wins for Ursinus and placing him in a tie for #5 among D-III pitchers) with a thin 1.73 (#2) in 81.0 IP'ed giving up 55 hits and 29 passes while blowing away 71 batters. Kyle completed 9/10 starts (no closers for him) and threw 5 shutouts. Kyle was named All-Centennial Conference, lst-team.

YANI ROSENBERG also dominated the opposition for Johns Hopkins (27-10) going 8 -1 (#1 in wins) with a 4.04 ERA (#4) in 62.1 IP'd (#1) allowing 51 H's and 16 BB's while fanning 72 (#1 for JHU and tying him for 16th place in D-III for K's per inning). He finished 3/11 starts and was reached for an opposing .225 b.a. Yani was named All-Mid Atlantic Region, 2nd-team.

TODD GITTLEMAN of Nova SE (30-24), our third starter, was 7 -3 (1 tie in wins) with a 3.60 ERA (#2) in 65.0 IP'd surrendering 61 H's and 34 BB's while striking out 68. Todd went the route in 3/11 starts and held the opposition to a .243 b.a. (#1).

Our middle reliever is JON ALPERT of Emory (30-14) who went 5 -1 (#2 tie in wins) with a 3.33 ERA (#1) in 51.1 IP'd (#4) ceding 53 H's and 21 BB's while fanning 29 and permitting the oppostion a .268 team b.a.

Our closers are ETHAN SOLOMON, also of Emory, who was 0-0 with a 3.68 ERA (#4) in 22.0 IP'd, getting reached for 17 H's and 10 BB's while striking out 16 and holding opposition batters to a lowly .218 b.a. Ethan's 6 saves place him a in tie for #7 among D-III pitchers.

DAVE KRAUSER of Amherst (19-9), finished at 4-2 with a tidy 2.74 ERA (#2) in 46.0 IP'd ceding 45 H's and 22 BB's while striking out 44. Dave led the Lord Jeffs with 4 saves while also completing 4/5 starts and hurling two shutouts.

Junior College Star

YARON PETERS, 1B of Cuesta College (34-13) from Sherman Oaks,CA., was named the Player of the Year in the All-Western State Conference and to the California Community College All-America Team.

Yaron batted .346 (#2) with 18 dingers (#1), 69 ribbies (#1), a .726 slugging % (#1) and 51 runs (#2). Yaron expects to play with a school in the Southeast Conference.
